Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
