Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
