Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts down to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
