Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
